Bernard W. Amos

Bernard W. “Pete” Amos, 93, of Medina passed peacefully from this life at the New York State Veterans Home in Batavia on March 23, 2019.

Born June 20, 1925 in Rochester, Mr. Amos was the son of the late Warren G. and Grace L. (Potter) Amos. He moved to Medina at an early age and graduated from Medina High School, class of 1942. Eager to enlist in the Army at the young age of 17, Pete was told by his father that he had to wait until his 18th birthday. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and served his country during WWII in the Pacific Theatre. He was sent with the 77th division Anti-Aircraft Artillery team and earned the rank of Corporal. He fought in Guam, the Philippines, Leyte and Okinawa and was honorably discharged in 1946. Returning home, he married the former Shirley J. Pask in 1948 and together raised a family of four daughters. In 1949 Mr. Amos graduated from R.I.T. He went on to work for Niagara Chemical Division, Niagara Mohawk, Medina Parts and finally for Harrison Radiator in Lockport as a design engineer for 29 years, retiring in 1982. He was a lifelong active member of the United Methodist Church in Medina where he served on several committees. Mr. Amos also served on the Village of Medina board and the Millville Cemetery board.  He was a member of both the Lincoln Post #1483 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Butts-Clark Post #204, American Legion. Pete was very active with Boy Scout Troop #28 in Medina and served as Scoutmaster for many years. He enjoyed guiding scouts through the various badges and Eagle Scout tasks as well as camping at Dittmer and the National Jamboree at Philmont. Pete and Shirley enjoyed travelling together, together they visited all 50 states and several countries. Following retirement, Pete volunteered at the Medina Memorial Hospital, Meals on Wheels and M.A.A.C. He was delighted to be one of the first to be on the Honor Flight out of Rochester in 2009. Mr. Amos was also incredibly honored to ride in the annual Medina Memorial Day Parade for several years and will be honored with a banner hanging along one of Medina’s streets this spring.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Shirley J. Amos on December 4, 2013 and his daughter, Cynthia L. Graham on January 20, 2014.

Survivors include his three daughters, Claudia (late Wilson) Southworth; Cheryl Smith and Colleen Brose; three grandchildren, Stacey (Clint) Cormier, Scott Scharping and Courtney Dzialo; four great-grandchildren, Caleb and Joshua Cormier, Isabella and Ariana Dzialo; sister, Betty (William) Crandall; sons in-law, DeVon Smith and Gregory Brose.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 3-7 p.m. at the Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina. His funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at The Grove United Methodist Church, 11004 W. Center St., Medina. The Rev. Larry Eastlack will officiate and burial will be in Millville Cemetery with full military honors accorded by members of the Lincoln Post #1483, V.F.W and Butts-Clark Post #204, American Legion. Memorial donations may be made to The Grove United Methodist Church.
