David J. Gates, Sr.

David J. Gates, Sr., of Waterport, NY entered into rest on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia.

Born October 1, 1951 in Albion, Mr. Gates was the son of the late Franklin and June (Maibaum) Gates. He worked as a private duty LPN (nurse) for almost 50 years. Mr. Gates had a strong passion for the martial arts. He was the owner and instructor of Charisma Academy of Martial Arts in Albion for over 30 years. He was also the proprietor of Pheonix Fitness in Albion for several years until he retired.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his twin sister, Donna Davis; and brother, William (Leslie) Gates.

Survivors include his wife, Donna M. (Albanese) Gates of Waterport; son, David J Gates, Jr. of Canandaigua; grandchildren, Collin and Hallie Gates; step-daughter, Lisa Ryan; step-sons, James (Cherri) Ryan, Richard (Rose) Ryan, Donald (Nicolet) Ryan and Dennis (Kristina) Ryan; step-grandchildren, Asad Bacht and David Leslie; nieces and nephews, John L’Hommedieu, Charles L’Hommedieu, Jessica Gates and Leah Gates.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 2-4 PM with a memorial service to follow at 4 PM at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina. Private interment will be held prior to services in Mt. Albion Cemetery.
