Roy J. Plummer, a resident of Barker, NY passed peacefully at his home at age 84 surrounded by family on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, his children Kimberly Wendling, Lisa Wilson, and Bob Plummer, and five grandchildren.
Roy, a first generation American, graduated from Medina High School and was the first in his family to earn a college degree, receiving a Bachelor of Music at SUNY Fredonia and Master of Education at SUNY Brockport.
Fresh out of college, Roy served in the military in the US Army during the Korean War, rising to office of Company Clerk of the Ninth Corps Headquarters in Sendai, Japan. He began his career in public education with 15 years of service as the High School Instrumental Music Teacher at Lyndonville, where the HS Marching Band reached 110 strong in 1970. He then served as High School Principal of Barker Central School for 17 years, where he was known for his smile, sense of humor, and support of excellence in teaching and student life. Mr. Plummer was a “father” to 100’s of students and taught the value of a good education. Following his retirement in 1988, he served on the Barker Board of Education, including his service as Board President. An active participant in SAANYS and NYS retired teachers’ organizations, Roy received the Irving Schwartz Distinguished Retiree Award in 1999.
While his career was important to him, his wife and family always came first. His family, especially, were the benefactors of his generous, giving heart and sense of humor. He was always there for them and left a legacy of caring for others amongst his children and grandchildren.
